You've heard the saying that "talk is cheap", but that's not always true when it comes to your phone bill. If you're dialing long distance, you don't have to be ringing up the charges. 7's Amy Johnson has more on how you can cut your calling costs.

Checkbook Magazine’s Robert Krughoff has 'checked' out long distance plans all over the country. He says rates here in the Bay State are some of the highest he's seen, but insists there’s a way around it.

"There are some very good long distance plans particular for calling within the United States."
He suggests looking into lesser-known carriers, ones that aren’t selling just a big name.

"Companies like pioneer telephone company or big red wire, these are companies that the information we have been able to gather seems they provide excellent service."
But if you feel safer with familiar companies - you can still get great deals, you just have to ask.

"If your going to take one of the big name carriers you want to make sure you check with them to make sure you get one of their discount plans."
If you're someone who makes a lot of state to state calls, Krughoff says look around for a plan that has a cap on what they'll charge you.

"There’s one company that will charge you a maximum of $21 no matter how much long distance calling you do. You could call 5 hours a day long distance and your still not going to spend more than $21 a month."
For international calls, you may get your best rates using pre-paid calling cards. But it’s important to read the fine print as some cards expire and charge a connection fee.
One other way to save is bundle planes. Combining your local, long distance and any other features you want such as voice mail and call waiting all into one.
